Saturn in Aquarius

Saturn is the furthest planet from Earth to still be visible with the naked eye, representing an apparent limit to our solar system. Saturn’s cycles are long, solemnly trudging around the zodiac every three decades, marking the maturation and passing of each generation with the unstoppable march of time. Even Saturn’s rings appear to bind and constrict the planet. Accordingly, Saturn is the planet of limits, boundaries, structures, obstacles, hardships, delays, tragedies, maturity, seriousness, responsibility, duty, punishment, foundations, longevity, sacrifice and hardening, the status quo and the old guard. The condition of Saturn at the time of our birth says something about the kind of challenges and fears we face, where we put great efforts with no ease or guarantee of success, where we attempt to build things, the parts of our lives where we are told ‘no’ and where we say ‘no’.

Saturn in Aquarius is in a fixed air sign and in its own element, where it is most naturally itself. Their encounters with Saturn are showdowns with darkness and loss, in the absence of light and leadership. The hardest questions for people born during these periods are about self-sufficiency. What laws do I follow without someone in charge? What are laws and structures based on if you take away traditional authority? What identity do I carve out for myself without a role model of parental figure, without a clear path laid out before me? How can I trust others when I can only really trust myself? There can be a fear of failure, self-doubt and a skeptic of sentiment and centralized leaders and systems. There can also be a great striving toward erecting abstract, mathematical or self-governing secular structures of ethics, law and science. They can be skilled in administrative capacities, very dispassionate, cold, hard, no bullshit.

This is especially true if you were born with Capricorn or Aquarius rising. Whether you experience the better or worse significations of this position depends on whether you were born during the day or at night, and the kind of aspects it makes with the other planets.
